D'Arpino State Cup: Sporting looking past Istria reserve team!
Saturday 12 November 2011 Even though Sporting have not won a league game since week 3, things feel different in the D'Arpino State Cup. Sporting dismantled Port Jeffereson 1st division reserve team 6-3 in the first round on Oct.23rd. A much improved Sporting team is looking to continue its good form against another LISFL club, this time it is Istria FC another 1st division reserve team. Sporting have made some key additions to the squad to find the right balance of players. So far it hasn't produced a win but against Korabi in week 6 Sporting put up a great fight against the undefeated group leaders. Sporting will host the round of 16 this Sunday at Randall's Island field 51 at 10am. Good luck Sporting!

CSL 2011-2012 Season: Field of Nightmares!
Monday 4 October 2011 Sporting were initially scheduled to play at Sloatsburg yesterday, the home of Missile FC. The game time was scheduled for 9am. But on Saturday morning they got a call from the league wondering if it would be alright to play at Randalls Island Field 74 and at 3pm instead. Sporting had the option of postponing since Missile FC couldn't supply a home field. Well Ed Romero unafraid of the bad results on that field decided to play on. Today he is probably lamenting his decision. Sporting crashed out to winless Missile FC 5-3. Click HERE for game recap!

CSL 2011-2012 Season: Sporting have found their form!
Monday 26 September 2011 Sporting has bounced back from their season opening loss winning their last two games. In week 2 Sporting outscored Cosmos 5-3 and in week 3 Sporting defeated Partizani 3-2. Both games were played in Randalls Island. Sporting are slowly fine tuning their game. Offensively Sporting has scored 11 goals, 2nd best in the division. However defensively Sporting is the exact opposite. They have allowed 11 which is third worst in the division. Sporting has some tough match ups ahead and hopefully their defense won't be an issue. In the coming weeks Sporting will play Korabi and Gwardia both in the top half of the group. Victories against these teams could put Sporting in a great situation. --------------------------------------------------
SASC: Sporting's Ed Romero appointed as Metro 1 Chairman!
Tuesday 16 August 2011 Sporting's top executive, Ed Romero, was appointed as Metro 1 chairman by CSL president Peter Strumpf. Ed will be responsible for managing the division and reporting on any important news or events to the board and the league. This is what Ed Romero has wanted for some time. Not only had he wanted to get on the board of the CSL but to contribute by being division chairman. Currently the club is undergoing changes to free up Ed Romero's time for his new position with the club. At the moment Sporting Astoria SC is scheduled to being the season on September 11th against Amsterdam. Due to the bad weather and Ed's new position in the league the club hasn't been able to sign any new players and renew some of their current players. The next couple of weeks will be challenging for the organization to be ready for the start of the season. --------------------------------------------------
CSL: Summer AGM annouces Ed Romero as trustee to the CSL executive board!
Tuesday 2 August 2011
This year's AGM was held last night at Three Monkeys Bars in Manhattan, sponsors of Lansdowne Boys of the 1st Division. The AGM concluded with a finale regarding the drama that had plagued the league all season. Eric Butte resigned as president and Peter Strumpf was voted back in after winning against first time presidential candidate Oliver Papraniku from NYC Albania. In other news, the emphasis on the night was rule changes and cash! Many new rules were voted in that came with harsh fine stipulations. Ed Romero's only rule change received very little support and was not voted in as expected. He wanted to put an a cap on the amount of teams clubs could have per division. The night concluded with Ed Romero along with 8 others being nominated to the Board of Trustees. Ed Romero is currently also in the run for Metro Division Chairman. However this position gets appointed by the current president. The season is set to start Sept. 11, 2011. Goal Scorers Table ![]() Sporting Astoria SC is the official soccer club of Astoria, Queens. Week Ten: "Sporting Hero" Sporting Astoria talisman Patricio Acosta headed home the equalizer in stoppage time to salvage a much-deserved 1-1 tie with Homenetmen. Homenetmen had led 1-0 from the 12th minute on Rahail Khan’s penalty shot and then proceeded to park the proverbial bus. “They had five defenders four defensive [midfielders] and one forward. But at the end of the match – with literally seconds left, the equalizer came,” commented Astoria GM Ed Romero. “It is great to see our team demonstrate such character.” State Cup Round of 8: "Astoria Special"
Sporting Astoria joined fellow Metro Div. One campaigners Missile in
the D’Arpino Cup quarters after a Patricio Acosta inspired 4-2 win over
First Division Clarkstown SC’s reserves on Randalls Island. The Sporting
legend created two goals and netted twice as Astoria held off their top
flight opponents. It was from an Acosta corner that Kevin Arancibia volleyed home the
ice-breaker. And after Robert Kcira had leveled for Clarkstown, Rocco
Leone restored the lead from an another Acosta assist. The turning point
of the match came when Clarkstown had a chance to go ahead from the
penalty spot after equalizing again through Claude Darling. However,
Dennis Kcira fluffed the spot kick and in a hard fought second half an
Acosta brace – one from the spot — saw Clarkstown o
ut.
“Great game, great win but an even better celebration at my backyard
that has been nicknamed the Sporting Astoria beer garden!” gushed GM Ed
Romero.
Week Nine: "Sporting Tie "
Rocco Leone canceled out Konrad Sobotka opener to earn Sporting Astoria a 1-1 tie with FC Gwardia PLNY on Randalls Island. The unmarked Leone was the recipient of a ball from the dangerous Alonso Huerta in the first half in a game of two halves. On the defensive for spells in the second half, Astoria had great performances from Ernesto Montano and Sebastion Espinosa. “A well-deserved draw for us on a weekend that we were barely able to suit up 11,” summed up Astoria GM Ed Romero.
Week
Eight:
State Cup Round of 16:
A three-goal second half blitz saw Sporting Astoria blow offt Istria reserves 4-0 in the D’Arpino Cup. Alonso Huerta’s volley [38th] had Ed Romero’s side 1-0 up at the interval before Patricio Acosta, Rocco Leone and Hector Hernandez scored in quick succession on resumption. “It was what we needed. We finally recorded our first clean sheet blowout victory,” said GM Romero, whose men hammered Port Jeff 6-3 in the previous round.
Week
Seven: "Sporting Effort"
“Life is tough without Gregzilla,” lamented Sporting Astoria GM Ed Romero after his side succumbed 3-2 on a late goal to undefeated Metro Div. One [West] frontrunners Korabi. Korabi recovered after conceding an own goal to lead 2-1, and after Patricio Acosta had equalized [60th] got the winner in the 80th minute. “Korabi made the most of their opportunities,” noted Romero, who won’t have the talismanic Gregzilla back until next spring. “Overall a great game. We can’t wait for the rematch.” Korabi improved to 6-0-1 [19], seven points ahead of Gwardia PLNY and Missile FC, who won 3-2 and 2-1 over BW G Cosmos and FC Partizani, respectively.
State Cup Round of 32: "Gregzilla!"
Sporting Astoria ended a three-match skid with a 6-3 victory over Port Jeff in the D’Arpino Cup, thanks to player they call “Gregzilla.” He chalked up a hat trick and one assist. Patricio Acosta banged in two goals and had as many assists, while towering English defender Graeme Humphreys also scored. “It was great to see us win again. Hopefully we can carry this over to this Sunday’s [league] match against Gwardia,” said Sporting GM Ed Romero.
Gotham Argo’s Anatoliy Taraneko had a monster game at Pier, scoring four times and recording one assist in a 6-3 shoot-out with battling Sporting Astoria. He set up Kevin Gordon’s opener and after Clifton Wellcome had forced an Astoria own goal, took over. Taraneko got his first two off assists by Jerry Dickinson, banged in one solo goal and then slotted in a rebound off his penalty. Astoria replied through Patricio Acosta who also created goals for Francisco Arevalo and Alonso Huerta. Gotham [3-2] are one of three teams in the East tied for second place with nine points. Week Five: "Black Sunday" Also in Metro Div. One, Alonso Huerta [60th] was on target after a through ball from Serigo “Chucky” Cobos in Sporting Astoria’s 2-1 defeat by Central Park Rangers Black on Randalls Island. Luckless Astoria hit the crossbar three times.
Week Four:
"Dismal Day"
Francisco “Panchito” Arevalo — from a Hector Hernandez cross — and Patricio Acosta [two] were on target for Sporting Astoria in a 5-3 loss to Missile FC at Sloatsburg Community Field. Astoria lost both center backs inside ten minutes to injury and clawed back from 3-0 down to tie the game at one point. “Tough result against a winless team that we should have beaten. That’s how it goes though,” sighed Astoria boss Ed Romero. The defeat left Astoria [2-2, 6] six points adrift of Metro Div. One West leaders Korabi.
Week Three: "Rare Win" Two-goal hero Hector Hernandez [35th, 45th] and Patricio Acosta [60th] led Sporting Astoria to a rare win over old rivals FC Partizani on Randalls Island. “It has been a very long time since we actually were able to defeat Partizani in league play. We finally got the monkey off our backs,” noted Astoria boss Ed Romero. Week Two: "Five-Star Astoria" Two-time D’Arpino Cup winners BW G Cosmos succumbed 5-3 to Sporting Astoria in a Metro Div. One affair on Randalls Island. Down 1-0 after 25th minutes through Rodrigo Perochena’s strike, Cosmos conceded four goals in the second half. Pancho Arevalo [65th, 75th] netted twice off assists by Patricio Acosta and Hector Hernandez, respectively. Acosta and Hernandez were also on target with the help of Abdul Salah [55th] and Alonso Huerta [80th]. “I’m proud of my guys for getting this win against a very good team,” said Astoria’s Ed Romero.
Week One: "Dutch Flood" Nieuw Amsterdam opened the floodgates at Bushwick Inlet, swamping Sporting Astoria 6-3 in their Metro Div. One bow. Adam Moss [two] and Mark Eisenacher connected in an open first half during which Astoria hit back with two brilliant goals. After the interval, a Ben Eichenberger free kick, Renaldo Vega’s penalty and a Joe Strider effort from a Moss flick-on killed off Astoria. “It was a solid win, against a team that has some real dangerous players going forward,” said C.P. de Vera. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() visitors since 03/10/2007
